I think I see your concern. At least in my experience, someone specifying they/them pronouns has been the easiest way for me to pick up that they are non-binary. If they/them is more commonly used as a generic gender neutral pronoun then it could make non-binary people less visible.
But I also think it’s a problem that the English language forces us to categorize everyone we speak about into a gender. I think this is the problem the author had in mind. I’ve typically seen this author mostly writing tech product reviews, so I think it’s great to them take on a subject like this.
