Happy Pride Month!
“My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” is introducing a lesbian pony couple on its next episode, “The Last Crusade,” to round out its final season.
Young Scootaloo’s family, who have been missing in action for the entirety of the series, are finally introduced in the coming episode and it’s revealed that her current guardians, Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty, are a same-sex couple.
The couple have appeared in the book “Ponyville Mysteries: Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe,” but this is their first time on-screen.
Michael Vogel, the producer and writer of the series, confirmed the news on Twitter, denying theories that Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty are either close friends or siblings.
When a fan asked whether they were lesbians in the book, Vogel responded, “well they aren’t sisters so…”
But just to make things clearly clear, Vogel wrote: “When I say ‘cute couple’ I’m saying that Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty are a cute couple. Yes.”
“I think it’s fantastic that we can show that what truly defines a family is love — that, to me, is the core of ‘My Little Pony,'” co-showrunner Nicole Dubac told Buzzfeed News.
Vogel told the publication that the idea was approved by Hasbro and that he and Dubac thought it was a great way to introduce a same-sex couple into the series.
“With Josh (Haber) and Nicole running the final season together, it was something we all wanted to do — bring this out couple into the final season and make them ‘officially’ a part of the MLP world,” Vogel said.
Showcasing diversity has always been an integral part of storytelling in the series, Hasbro’s head of global communications Julie Duffy said in a statement to USA TODAY.
“We have featured many types of families in the show over the past nine seasons and we hope this helps to provide kids and fans from all backgrounds an opportunity to identify with our characters and learn from their stories,” Duffy said.
The episode has already aired in Europe, but will be making its debut in the U.S. on Saturday on the Discovery Family channel at 11:30 a.m. EDT.
